Big Tech Job Cuts Continue Despite AI Boom, 140,000+ Roles Lost in 2025

It’s a startling paradox: while investment in artificial intelligence surges, the tech industry is shedding jobs. Analysts report that more than 141,000 positions have been eliminated so far in 2025 within major firms like Microsoft, Alphabet Inc., Amazon and Meta Platforms — amounting to a roughly 17% increase in layoffs compared to the previous year. The reason? Companies say they’re streamlining operations and preparing for a future where AI and automation reduce the need for large workforces. While hiring continues in specialised AI roles, broader headcounts are shrinking — and morale among tech workers is under strain.

For workers, the message is clear: the days of more-or-less secure tech-sector employment may be over. Upskilling — particularly in AI, data science, and human–machine collaboration — is becoming increasingly important. For employers, the challenge lies in balancing rapid innovation with human capital risk and reputational impacts from mass layoffs.
